Er, what's this? Grown from 'basil' seeds
« on: April 28, 2009, 18:58 »
Pretty self explanatory question... we've grown a healthy number of basil seedlings from a packet of seeds this year, but one has surged ahead and looks / smells nothing like basil. Anyone care to guess / tell me what this is and whether I should continue wasting a pot on it?

Thanks!

Re-arrange into a well know phrase or saying...

"it throw out"!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My guess is spinach as well. It happens on the seed packaging lines that a few seeds will blow into other areas.

I once got some Dodder with my basil seeds - very interesting parasitic plant - grew it for a season out of curiosity
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Not tasted it yet Shaun due to irrational fears of scary plants breaking into seed factory. In fact it's not the only one to have come out of the basil packet looking like anything other than basil - we have another mystery seedling out in the greenhouse that I might photograph another time.

We're not short of pots just yet so I'm tempted to leave it to grow on for a bit. Thanks for all the thoughts.

You have 2 choices - despatch it, or let it grow. I would let it grow, out of curiosity, and more chance of identifying it when it flowers. Keep us posted when you identify it!

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Email the photo to the seed company. They will be grateful to know that there are impurities in their seeds. They will probably send you replacement seeds. What seed company is it?

A while ago I planted some flower seeds (can't remember what) that I'd never grown before and hence didn't know what to expect. In about 80% of the pots this spindly but kind of interesting plant game up. I diligently watered and nurtured these plants, got them to a good size and planted them out in a border. Then my mother came round......

"Ohh, look at those horrid weeds all in a row"

Then she told me it was Fat Hen  :D

What a muppet
