Pallet Compost Bin
« on: April 27, 2009, 20:54 »
I'm going knock up a couple of these at the weekend (hopefully)&once they're built they'll need filling. So whats the best thing to line the inside with? I thought maybe some thick polythene or similar fabric or would that hold to much moisture?

Most people use chicken wire to stop stuff falling through the gaps in the pallets but still let in air. I live in a windy area so I am lining the back wall of mine with cardboard but other than that nothing.

On top of soil directly so all the little creatures, worms, microbes can gain access and any excess moisture can drain out

I shovel a bit of manure on the bottom (preferably with a few brandling worms to help things along) and then just fill it up as normal.

I started my current one a couple of weeks ago, been putting on tea bags, veg peelings, grass cuttings, some plant material from the garden and seaweed (Live by beach), I went out this evening to chuck on some more kitchen stuff and I stuck the fork in to make sure the grass cuttings were well mixed and I was surprised how much heat was being generated in a heap just 18 to 24 inches high.

I put my pallet compost bins directly onto the soil and I don't usually bother to line them with anything.  I've been composting this way for about four years and don't have a problem with anything escaping.

It's a great way to make compost bins.

I lined mine after a revamp with some old weed fabric that had been covering a couple of mounds I have now dug over, it was  bit tatty but still stapled on well. I chicken wired the front and made a double thickness weed fabric top wrapped round chicken wire as a lid weighed down with a couple bricks to stop stuff blowing about as its a very windy site. This time I built it properly and layered green and brown and not used it as a dumping ground for anything i didnt know what to do with!
