Companion planting - alliums

Companion planting - alliums

I'm having a bit of a problem with space on my bit of allotment at the moment so this year things are going in where they fit rather than to a plan.  I thought I'd found a good space for my climbing peas before I remembered that all the companion plant tables say don't plant legumes next to alliums and my proposed pea spot is right next to a couple of rows of garlic.  How important is it that peas should not be next to garlic?  And why does it make a difference?

I grew leeks next to my runner beans last year & they were fine.

Thanks - I'll give it a go and see what happens!  I'm counting this year as an experimental year in any case.
