Wrong weather for seed sowing ..
« on: April 26, 2009, 22:31 »
Are others as frustrated by the weather as I am?
I did manage to make a first sowing of several different types of seed just before the last rain and that was good. But the soil has been too dry for a further sowing so the day before yesterday I was about to sow in well watered beds when I heard that rain was expected for then next day (yesterday), so I waited. It rained elsewhere but not in my garden. Today I watered and sowed - and won't surprise me if we have a deluge tomorrow.

Did you see tomorrow's forecast on Look North :D

Lots of blue, some occasional yellow - yep, you sowed at the right time  ;)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It looked like it would rain here at about teatime, went all dark and breezy, then just blew over and was sunny again later.

I've been waiting for rain not just for seedlings but also for nematodes which I applied on Wednesday ( watered again on Friday, but have been misled by forecast of rain and not done it again since).

Rain here at last this morning!!
When the soil is dry sow like this :
- Make the usual drill with a hoe, trowell or stick.
- Dribble water along the bottom of it without a spout on the can.
- Sow the seeds on the wet soil and pat down gently so that there is good seed contact.
- Pull a little dry soil over the seed from the edges.
- With the back of a rake gently firm down along the row.

At least my nematodes will be happy and the beetroot seedlings I planted out yesterday are looking quite perky ! :)
