How do I grow Sugar Snap Peas??
« on: April 26, 2009, 20:15 »
This is my first year at attempting to grow veggies, but I was given some Sugar Snap pea seeds, but no intructions on how to start them off? Is now the right time? are they easy to grow? any hints or tips would be very useful!  :)
Thanks

Same as any other pea.

Make a 6" wide trench about 2" deep, you can do this using a draw hoe.

Space the seed thus:

(In practice I get a hand full & sling in!).

Cover over with soil, net & wait for germination.

I suggest we get this far, then pop back for help with support, otherwise it could be too much at once!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The bog standard Sugar Snap grows to 6 ft so you will need some tall peasticks or netting unless you can find the dwarfer variety.

The cropping season is not very long so rather than full rows I tend to sow part rows at two week intervals. I also grow a few in pots to fill any gaps

Good lick - I think they are a really worthwhile crop
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

evrey-one says these are easy.  So where am I going wrong?
I'm a first timer on any veg. and only got my allotment 3 weeks ago so while I'm clearing it I thought I'd get a head start an dput some sugar snap into trays with some nice seed compost - but only 5 of my 18 have germinated. Is this normal? I'm guesing I'll need a few more than this.    I had planned that I'd plant out the early starters and then sow some direct, but looks like plans and practice have again gone astray.
Trays  are ali take away trays with holes in the bottom sitting outside where th ebroad beans in pots are doing great things.  Could they be too wet?

If theyve been overwatered they could have rotted, when did you sow them? They could still come through...a lot of my seeds of all types have took at least 3 weeks this year..some even longer

I sowed about 2 weeks ago, so maybe I need patience.  The first throiugh is now 5" high but teh last one is only 1" so maybe there's more to come.
The compost was really wet when I sowed but I haven't needed to water since as they didn't seem to dry out at all.

Thanks! I'll save some to sow straight into the patch when its finished! :)
I'm also thinking of putting some into seed trays (or pots?) to give some a head start?
