I have a plastic container that would be handy for growing fly Away carrots. I am unsure what type of soil to use as I know they like it not too rich so I suppose ordinary shop bought garden compost wouldn't be suitable.

Can anyone suggest the best type of soil for the best results ?

I am going to be trying normal compost mixed in with sand...  have no idea if it is going to work as it is the first time I have done it!!

I believe they like a well drained and light growing medium; so a mixture of soil, sand and a little compost I would suggest. I have got mine growing in wooden containers:

I've got mine growing in big pots in a mixture of comercial potting mix and coarse sand (almost 50/50 a bit more soil than sand). it's the first year i've grown them and they're only small as yet, but they seem to be doing ok so far. from what i've read here and other places the two most important things are no manure and no stones. both of these cause them to make weird warped carrots.
