Does size really matter?
« on: April 25, 2009, 09:49 »
Hi, I have a bantam cockerel and two full sized girlies all get on fab and I was just wondering that if one of the girls happened to go broody would his attempts at mating with them be successful and is it ok to let them breed?

Welcome to the Hen House Danmegal,
Different sizes of horses and dogs breed OK, so I should think bantam/hens should be fine, too.  It would be a guessing game as to their eventual size potential, though.
Are your girls pure breeds, or hybrids?  I ask because hybrids don't usually go broody - it's bred out of them, poor things, all that egg laying and no lickle fluff balls to show for it.

Yeah they are hybrids which is why the thought hadn't crossed my mind until now, my one hen is spending much more time in her nest than usual and the last few days has taken quite an interest when I collect the eggs she even stood over them yest. If nature took its course nicest way to increase the numbers!

Hi Dan, if he has any problems, just give him a step ladder!!! lol

But seriously, he should be okay, and probably better for the hen to have a smaller man jump on her than a really big guy!
