French Beans
« on: April 24, 2009, 21:28 »
 >:(
Hi Guys

New to the allotment growing, and I have been reading alot of the posts.  Got an allotment at Christmas.  All allotments are brand new.....living in Milton Keynes with new building etc, so all of us are very inexperienced.  We have been really busy and dug over half the plot.

Planted earlies, carrots, onions and peas, and some french bean seedlings.  These have been in for over two weeks, doing really well, and then yesterday and today, turning a bit yellow,  We have watered every day.  The seedlings are about 3/4 inches.

Please help whats wrong

Welcome to the forum, you are not too far away from me.  It's hard to diagnose without a picture, but lot's of questions might narrow it down a bit.

What is your soil like?  Any idea what the land was used for previously?  What have you put on the soil as compost/manure?
Cheese makes everything better.

In addition to Ice's questions... I'm assuming it's just the beans which are going yellow? If so:

Did you harden the beans off for a couple of weeks (i.e. put them outside during the day and then overnight too) before planting them out?  If not, the shock will have set them back.

Are they covered with fleece?  With the clear days, some of the nights have got quite cool and beans are not frost hardy - might not have been killed but won't like low temperatures.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'm coming in with Yorkie on the cold nights.

Mine haven't even germinated yet.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hiya BellaBean I am in MK too!

We have had a couple of nights where frost was forecast over the last week or so (particularly at the early part of last week) so it may be that.

Good luck with the plot, and this is a great site for advice!

I had green leaves on mine last year and a cloche seemed to work for me, i put it down to the colder nights. ame out good in the end though.

I'm local, now living in Dunstable but I was born and bred in sunny Bletchley!

::)Thank you all very much for your answers,  With regard to Yorkie1, I only harden them off for about 5 days, toooo eager to get them planted in the allotment.  Then regarding the fleece, the weather being so nice, I thought that they would be ok.  I have a fleece so I will put it on tonight, and try that. I have some more hardening off in the garden, so will leave them longer too

Not all lost, I can always plant some more..........they seem to spring up as you blink.
Elcie where are you in MK--------I am in Westcroft
Thanks again

My plot is in Walnut Tree.  I have had it since July last year.  We have gone the raised bed route.  If you fancy a visit let me know, I am no expert but it is an established site.
