Sweetcorn - oh dear!
« on: April 23, 2009, 20:49 »
I hardly dare admit this on here and I am willing to accept the 'oh dear, oh dear's'.

I planted my sweetcorn out at the pot today!

The roots had grown down out of the toilet roll inners I had repotted them into a couple of weeks ago so I just had to go for it.  They are inside individual 2ltr pop bottles at the moment (minus lids for ventilation) but they are not going to last long in them as they are already hitting the sides.

I felt like I was driving them to their deaths, and I also wanted to shout out to everyone at the allotment 'I know I am a month too early!'

Anyone every planted corn this early and got cobs from them?  Anyone any suggestions on how to keep them warm enough once I have to remove the bottles in about 2 days?!

Your best hope is that we're over a month earlier with the last frost than we were last year!

How many have to got to protect?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

2 3ft/3ft beds.  16 plants in one of them, 12 plants in the other!

I did take the advice on here though and have sown some more so if all else fails I have some replacements ready that should be ok in about a month.

I have plenty of fleece as found the Poundland supply.  Has worked well for me in the greenhouse so far.

Will try and post a photo of the contraptions that we create at the weekend!

My OH is going to try and get some bubble wrap, thought this might help?

My biggest problem, once we get past working out how to create a structure, is that I will have to go down there each morning to take it off!  At what overnight temperature will sweetcorn be ok?

That might well be so or not, it looks a warm season, anyhow, however, a pack of seeds - which I'm sowing this weekend  - is much cheaper and less hassle than any other malarky. ::)

I'm not saying we will get a frost, but if you can forecast with any accuracy 4 weeks ahead, you're doing better than the met office!

I'm still erring on the cautious side.
