warm the demi john, then fill with very hot water (not boiling) and add a dish washer tablet. Swirl til it's dissolved using a good long brush and leave overnight. Then rinse very well. Then sterilise. If it's still stained, it aint coming off!

I have used washing machine persil,  a good scoop of it in warm water and leave for 24 hours,  rinse it out well and sterilise as usual.  It realy does work.  if it dont come clean then,  well it aint ment to.

step 1 - Clean with very hot water and washing up liquid. Warm demi-johns first to avoid breaking them.

step 2 - fill them with about 1 inch of vinegar and a handfull of rice.

step 3 - sterilize with VWP cleaner/steralizer.

Hi All,

I have about 6 demi johns that I will be using very shortly for some spring wines. 4 of them look clean however 2 of them are dirty inside. It is like a haze/chalk that will come off a bit but not completely.

I have tried with a bottle brush, dries peas etc but nothing will work. They are too good to throw away. Obviously I will use campden tabs but they need to be clean first.

Any ideas?

Go to a brew shop (or online) and buy a tub of either Chempro or VWP.  It's only a couple of quid for a tub and this will make about 30 gallons of solution (so 30 demijohns cleaned).  I've used it on really old and manky demijohns people have given me, ones stored in greenhouses and attics for decades and it's never failed.  It will remove the most stubborn and nasty stains and deposits.  It does take 24 hours with the demijohn topped right up with the solution and left to stand.

Thanks

xx
