Supermarket bought herbs
« on: April 21, 2009, 19:22 »
Whenever my wife buys potted herbs like basil, they never seem to last long. I decided to re-pot one with more compost and it has lasted weeks. It's probably cheeper than buying seeds. Do you think th supermarkets plant them in some kind of compost that makes sure they don't last that long :D

Has anyone else had success this way ?

The ones I have purchased over time nearly always died within days a few I caught in time and stuck them in the garden, they had two choices and they all seem to have pulled through ok even one I deperately tried to murder in the same pot for 9 years with no water or re-potting survives so I decided it has earnt the right to grace the garden borders (whats the bet it dies as soon as I pop it out of its home)  :tongue2:

it's because they cram far too many in the pot. If you buy a pot and transplant them they 'do' a lot better as each plant can bush out a bit if you pinch the tops. So you get much more basil for your money. i did this one year with great success when my sowings failed through overwatering ::)

I think they are grown on very quickly with heat, lights and liquid feed  so they find difficulty in adjusting to a different environment and the change during transport and display at the supermarket.
Having said that I have successfully  grown on supermarket basil and garlic chives and as has been said they are relatively cheap so worth having a go
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I bought some wilted chives in a pot last year for 15p -- loads of really healthy plants in the graden now as I separated them out into small clumps and gave the a bit of TLC et voila  .... good crops and can't wait for the flowers!!
