When the male bits on the top branches are loose Kris, and the female tufts waiting below are sticky  ;)

After seeing your post & incredible pic DD, I chitted some corn too - and mine also sprouted within 30 hours. Not as pretty as yours - no paprika - but amazing result!

In the greenhouse, 6 from 15 sown have germinated - the rest have just mouldered I reckon. From the chitted ones - same batch of seeds - there was 100% germination.

So the prob wasn't the seeds, just obviously the conditions I provided.

I will always chit my corn from now on. Thank you  :)
I'm also planting more and closer together - as per another of your posts - as they didn't seem to need the room I gave them last year.

Many thanks for enlightening, DD  :)

Don't thank me - It's something I picked up on the advise of others, I'd never tried it before, I just supplied the piccies!

I had to hold them back for a day, until I got the chance to deal with them, so I put them in the cooler garage. They didn't grow much more and seem fine.

I've potted up 101 of the 131 I chitted, (these were old seed, in fact on reflection they were 2 years old, I thought they were one year). I'm happy with that number as I was aiming for a 5 x 20 block. I've put the remaining 30 back to see if they will chit. If not - nothing lost and I've saved the effort of sowing 30 unviable seed!

The main thing is that we know know how quickly the seed chits, it did rather take me by suprise!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They do chit very quick, and it's an excellent way of starting them off, I've done it this way for years. What I do find interesting is how yours are coated with a germination enhancer whereas a lot these days are not. I can only think that because they have come from a commercial source that it's still acceptable to coat.

"What I do find interesting is how yours are coated with a germination enhancer whereas a lot these days are not"

Is that the Paprika coating?

I assumed that was to deter the birds from eating them?

No it's not paprika, as far as I know it's a germination enhancer

I thought it was an anti-fungal coating, according to Moles website it should say on the packet if the seed has been treated with anything.  Of course I've now binned the packet!

It's definately NOT paprika - thank you Ice!

Could be a fungal inhibitor, I thought I'd read years back that it was a germination enhancer could be the same thing.
