the once ubiquitous cabbage white is now in serious decline so maybe we all should plant a few unprotected brassicas or nasturtiums.

I am sorry, I am all for being environmentally friendly and recognising the importance of all creatures.  However, if cabbage whites and slugs were to completely disappear I would wake up a little bit happier each day.

I've seen at least 3 pairs today whispering sweet nothings in each others ears... Certainly no shortage round here. Mind you next door does grow a 300sq foot patch of nettles for them to play on.

only 3 pairs? 30 years ago you'd have seen 4 pairs.

also, blue alf; would you be selfish enough to hold onto all those 1000 cabbage seeds yourself? oh dear me.

That would have been the same pair 4 times - just they had more "energy" back then.   :nowink:

That's 999 for the slugs and 1 cabbage for him.  :D

Not at all mate, we have an entirely new plot of 10 and after joining here i will be defo trying to set up a share scheme.

I was just trying to pull your leg a little  :tongue2:

ps infact i have been offered some sprout seedlings and as a delivery man i have flung a few pallets to people who have needed them.

Sharing is a good thing when you get 1500 carrot seeds in a pack

Be very wary of accepting brassica plants. You could unknowingly import club root.

As for 1500 carrot seed - you'll need all of them for a decent row.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Blimey its a complicated life, what have i let myself in for

If they have been grown from seedlings surely they wont be infected ?

So you are saying i wasted my time with the tweezers and carrot seed then  :(

"Mind you next door does grow a 300sq foot patch of nettles for them to play on."

Cabbage White butterfly larvae don't feed on nettles, the caterpillers that feed on nettles are Peacocks, Commas, Small Tortoiseshells and I think Painted Ladies, all beautiful, increasing rare and a totally welcome addition on my plot any day of the week.  I think nettles are brilliant purely as food stuff for these fantastic insects- in the right place of course  :)

What DD. means be wary of any brassicas that you yourself have not sown, Club root is carried in the soil, once you have it  ;)  Well at least that's what I think he means

We do plant nasturtiums for that very reason :D :D It means the children get to see them caterpillars at eye level too

Precisely what I meant. "Imported" means from elsewhere!

I hope you're joking about the tweezers!
