Sold Out??? hmmmm
« on: April 18, 2009, 23:15 »
I was  on my way back from a wonderful family day out today and drove by was turned out to be a  really good smaller garden centre. So good so far.

Anyway some real good looking cabbage seedlings caught my eye which them happened to be £1.75 for 12.

So i bought em! and put them in the plot where they a sitting very happy.

Now my problem is...

Even tho this is my first yr growing anything and im learning as i go,  which so far ive enjoyed and managed very well. Ive grown everythin from seed  myself!

A fellow plot holder even asked me if i grew them myself, which i had to say no and pointed out my weedy looking primo seedlings.

So have i sold out to myself and allotmentering?  im kinda feeling i have  :(

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

No MW, you've just given yourself a bit of a headstart with one crop.
You've still lots of work to do with the rest, don't worry about it  ;)

The first year I grew 'my own' I bought several different seedlings.  its not selling out.  look at it as adoption.  I have two 'home grown' babies and one adopted and all three are still very much 'mine'.  I nutured and loved them into teens/adulthood even though they came from different sources.  same with seedlings (IMHO!)!

I am total noobie myself this year and about to start planting my first things TODAY so I am joining the party late. I will probably end up buying seedlings as firstly my greenhouse needs major repairs and secondly I am trying to get my head round how to manage it all!

Sounds like common sense to me !

I've even heard Bob Flowerdew recomend buying plants in to new allotment holders on Gardners Question Time.

It's an easy way to catch up if work/illness, (anything ::) ) has stopped you  getting on your plot and you are behind in any sowings

Some people find certain crops difficult to germinate and always buy those as plants....
problem solved. Don't worry what anybody else thinks just enjoy your growing 8)

I would have said, "Yes I grew these babies from seed-they are coming on well aren't they!  If you need any tips just ask"  ;)  LOL  :D

BTW I have bought loads of plant plugs from the local shop as I have had very little time this year but I'll still be pleased as punch when I am eating them!

No you haven't. I'm growing everything myself, but I had a little probelm with my cabbage seeds the dog got hold of the packet and chewed it.. >:( I managed to retrieve five ::)..so they are growing away happily. I saw some cabbage seedlings too and I thought ..Aha  I'll make up what I lost with those..happy days I'd say...

I kind of know what you mean though MW, I'm new to it all too...don't worry about it, next year we'll be experts at it... ;)

Not to Hijack the thread but ... how do you all feel about buying in brassicas ? I had a friend that swears that how he imported club root.

Im not sure his were GC plants or from a car boot or similar and it was a while back.

Personally I would never buy in brassica's for that reason alone.

What a missed opportunity :tongue2: :tongue2:
Tell him he has let the whole of the allotment world down :D :D :D
That he should be drummed off of the allotment plot
His account on this forum should disabled
All his tools should be broken and bent out of recognition
And that he should hang his head in shame everytime he passes an allotment site. ::) ::)

Run out of things  to say, if I can come with a few more I will.

Then again you should now have a staggered supply of cabbages. :) :) :)

£1.75 could've bought you about 1000 cabbage seeds.

In the 3 years that you can keep seeds for, who the hell eats 1000 cabbages
