Lost to Enemy Action this week.
« on: April 18, 2009, 12:15 »
14 Bolthardy beetroot.
2 Trafalgar Sprouts
2 Maximus Sprouts
4 Rudolf P.S.B.
4 Avalanche Cauliflowers
6 Hispi Cabbage
2 Fuego Cabbage
1 Red cap cabbage

and lastly my patience with the slimy ones. Thats most of the seedlings I put out to harden off - Gone.

Oddly the 2 trays of twinkle peas were left untouched.  ???

I really don't remember it being this bad last year. Im resorting to chemical warfare. I know I shouldn't but at this rate there will be nothing left to plant.

I sow my brassicas in seed trays at home now and I have to confess they get a smattering of slug pellets while outside as the exact same thing happened to me during the wet May of 2007.  I was so angry - let's put it this way, up till then I was always a bit squeamish about slugs & snails, but the one I found ......

Wow that's lousy luck Lardman, very sorry to hear it  :(

It's simply not worth it just to feed the slimies - get the pellets out!

Aww sorry Lardman thats bad  :( Its pellets all the way for me, I know its not eco-friendly, but Im good at not using weedkiller and I feed my soil organically.   Ive said a million times, Im not doing this to feed the *&$£ slugs and snails!

The choice is between them eating or me eating.

There is no contest. Sorry - it's the blue food for them!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I must admit to using organic slug pellets but i derive a great deal of pleasure in roaming around my plot like some kind of mongol warlord with a knife in my hand ,you guess the rest

Growing Success do organic slug pellets - says on the tub they are wildlife friendly.

Found a cheeky snail climbing the inside of the greenhouse.  Threw  him to the chickens.  That's natural pest control and recycling!

I hope you guys squash, snip or throw to the chickens any slgs or snails you see, before using the pellets.

Although I have a tiny bit of experience in growing I am hoping to not use slug pellets if poss.

Am I being Naive? there don't seem to be many and any I see I squash between my fingures :) they are small ones so not too horrid or anything.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

I've been collecting snails the last week when it's been damp, they've eaten several of my peas I just have foot long stalks  I just squish um with a brick. Haven't seen many slugs in comparison.

I had a massive slug and snail problem until i got chickens.

Now finding a slug or snail to give to the chickens as a treat is very hard!

Well that's the trick, Jake - seeing them!
If only they carried banners with "I'm just off to eat your cabbages" and didn't hide during the day.

But they don't announce their intentions or presence, and every moment we leave our veg unsupervised is a moment for them to feast. And they DO. I have thousands, living near wetlands, and couldn't grow a thing to fruition without pellets.

I rarely do see em, since they go rampaging while I'm in bed usually. All that remains to show they've visited are their slimy trails, always around my new seedlings next day.
And their dried-up bodies, after they were caught in their last act.
Without pellets, it'd all be decimated - as sadly happened to Lardman & tam.

If you are unaffected to this level then you are truly fortunate. Needs must for most of us though, Jake  ;)

I have a book somewhere which lists how many pellets a bird/dog/hedgehog would have to actually consume in order to become ill/die - it really is a VAST amount of pellets!
