Yes well done Looby, you did what was best for her, which is the most in some situations any of us could do.

One method that I use is starting fluid (ether) like for a diesel engine. I generously soak a rag with it and just hold it over the nostrils. The bird will just go to sleep and then pass a little later on. It does take about 15 minutes though for a large bird. I have two rags as it evaporates quickly and switch out between the two often.

In early times Ether was used in surgery to knock out patients. An overdose though is fatal. It is also highly flamable so if you ever use this method be very careful about open flames or ignition sources. And do not do it indoors as the fumes can also put you to sleep.

Its hard to let any animal go!  :( when my cat who had polycystic kidney desease went downhill fast I knew it was time, but it didnt make it easier! I called the vet who came out and put her to sleep in my arms!  :( it was the hardest thing i ever did knowing that i made that decision but it was the right one, we are all here for one another! and if i had to do the deed with any of my girls i would want you guys to help me through it! xxx

Have a stiff drink if you can Looby. Try and find another thread to read and see if you can have a laugh before bedtime.

well theres only one thing i can say  THANKYOU  to all of you guys . life is tough but it has to carry on .

with my larger pets like dogs or the  horses  it was very hard but both were   suffering my horse had laminitis an no treatment was helping her so i made that decision to let her go an my samoyed dog i found collasped on the floor an i think he fell out of the bed and damaged his back as he could not stand or anything but within 30 mins of finding him i had him put down as i would not allow him to suffer in any way shape or form with the treatments an tests at the time the vet totally agreed .
