Nemaslug - when to apply?
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:10 »
I was thinking of trying some of this stuff this year.  I only have potatoes, Broad Beans, Onions and Garlic in the ground at the moment and I know the stuff only lasts a couple of weeks once you order it.  should I wait until the lottie is more fully planted the put it on or will it kill the slugs anyway?

ordered mine Monday and it's being delivered tomorrow or saturday, I'm going to apply it this weekend as it takes a couple of days to be effective, then I can think about planting out some cabbage seedlings and sowing some beetroot, lettuce, spring onion and carrot seeds.  The nematodes are effective for about 6 weeks, so in that time that sowing should get a headstart without being munched straight away.

You need to have the ground wet before applying them, then keep it damp for a few days after, so this weekend might be good. Rain is forecast.

As I understand it, the nematodes are parasitic creatures which eat the host creature i.e. slugs for nemaslug.

They are watered on, and need a certain temperature to work.  They cover a certain area and are not cheap.  I believe that, if applied in accordance with instructions, they are effective for the length of time stated.

As for cost-effective, can't answer that - it's a value judgement.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks, I watered the raised beds well before and after applying the nematodes. I will look at forecast for rain here and decide if I need to water again on Friday perhaps.

I'm really interested to see how effective they are, not used them before. I also have copper tape as a barrier on my raised bed wooden walls. Will be interesting to experiment next year with no nematodes and see how long the raised beds remain slug free. Or am I being way too optimistic here  ???

I think it's just slugs as they kill them under the surface of the soil, but I'm not 100% sure.

ive used nemalug since digging my allotment over from grass.
i gave it a dose half way through feb then a dose halfway through march.
i know they say it lasts six weeks . but there were a few cold nights along the way.

my neighbours are are suprised  that nothing has been touched by slugs .
and i mean nothing , i have not lost one tiny leaf to a slug

and they are about , i just have to look at my neighbours plots to see the difference.

ive not used one slug pellet , but i hoe enthusiastically often to upturn slug eggs to the elements plus keeping a nice broken uneaven surface for them .

But horror of horrors all my broad beans that looked like prize winning specimins only a day ago. they have been badly attacked by the dreaded  bean weevil . i just hope
they will survive:)

It would cost me nearly £200 to do all of my plots!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

count yourself lucky :)
i am wondering if i have the smallest allotment at 40 square metres.
i waited three years for it .
there is meant to be a shortage of allotments , so they cut them in half.

yet as i wonder where the hell i'm going to plant everything and try and time my crops
there is hardly room for error or to stand.

so one pack of nematodes treats my patch for £10.50p
