« on: April 15, 2009, 18:32 »
i need to know if you can tell me, when you have young plants in 3-5 in in size how often should they be watered , i do mine every day even though its roasting hot at the moment , but ive noticed that if im away and they dont get done every day then they seem to grow faster , is this all in  my head .

Hi Chrissie
I have recently taken to watering plants from below in a reservoir tray and I have to say they seem to be better fot it.  They take only the water they need and are "nicely damp" most of the time, which I believe is the best way to keep most plants.  Can only offer what works for me, but it means I don't have to worry about drying out or over-watering as both will kill off the plant.

I feel the weight of a pot to see if needs watering.

If you've got some that haven't been watered for a couple of days "feel" the weight, water well, leave for 20 minutes or so and then "feel" the weight again.

"feel" involves just trying to move the pot so that it leans a bit, and see how much resistance there is - basically its a weight test, but you don't have to pick the whole thing up.

Maybe takes a bit of experience, but might work for you

Sorry, I mistakenly read the "3-5 inches" as being a pot size  :(

Chrissie when you water your plants, make sure you soak them well or they will send their roots in search of the moisture near the surface and then suffer if this 'easy' water isn't there one day. It needs to soak down to their roots.... I read somewhere that an inch of water depth soaks down about six inches into the soil, if none evaporates first. Not sure if it is true but I use it as a rough guide.

Hope that helps  :D
