To mound or not?

Having spoken to a number of experienced allotment growers there appears to be a difference of opinion in whether potatoes need mounding or not.

Any opinions?

Hi,

I'm no expert, but I'm fairly sure you need to "earth up", else the tubers that develop nearer to the top of the soil will turn green.
Typically, I earth up once when the foliage is about a foot high, but some people say you should do it a few times through the growing period.

I have moulded my early potatoes and planted my late potatoes without a mould, but as the late one grow I will cover them.

Think you mean "mounded" Celery.

Of course you should mound/hill spuds, unless you use another light supressant technique.

I prefer to do mine in stages over the growing period as this works the soil & chops any weeds that might be thinking about it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi, if you ridge them you get a better yield something to do with the stems, also the troughs help to retain water.

As well as preventing green potatoes moulding up several times helps to reduce weeds. Each time you mould up you kill a crop of weeds and bring more weed seeds to the surface, which germinate and are killed in the next moulding up. Eventually the potato tops shade out the weeds.

I dont grow potatoes often as i've got much room. But when I do it is just for that reason Salmo, to clear the soil.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.
