Rehoming abandoned stuff
« on: April 13, 2009, 03:22 »
Anybody ever 'rehomed' plants from abandoned plots before..? Or does anyone have any moral opinions on moving or rehoming stuff left behind on unused plots. Right or wrong? Or not even deserving of such a classification?

I'd say if it's abandoned, the person who had the site didn't want it and it therefore should go to a good home.

There was a gu talking about this at my site the other day the plot next to his was full of stuff that was going over and he didnt like to take it.  It all went over and had not been touched in a year they plot holder had moved away.  It makes sence to ask around and make sure they have left as it seems a shame to let good food go to waste.
Thanks
Kris

This happened at our site last year.  A lady had put in so much effort and had wonderful beans, courgettes, sweetcorn, potatoes, tomatoes... the list goes on.  After mid-August she didn't appear and it used to break my heart to see it just drying up and going to waste.  Often used to think about whether to pick some of it but never did.  Don't regret it as it was her plot.  In fact, she is back now and just had some personal stuff going on.  Shame she didn't let one of us know though and we could have at least harvested some stuff for her.

I rehomed something by taking cuttings of blackcurrant prunings that had been left lying around.  I now have lots of blackcurrant bushes starting to sprout. :D

It might seem a bit forward for us reserved brits but if you do not see the owners of the  neighbouring plots regularly would it make sense to swap mobile no`s with them so you can send a quick text warning of problems, offering surpluses or begging bits that look like they might be going to waste.
If you get on well with them it could benefit all concerned.
