Firstly welcome to the Mad house Therealcalzone.
Wow where are you in Roughlee?

Love the photos.
Amazing breed of pigs.
http://www.mangalitza.co.uk/
How old are they?

Pet or Pot?

 :D

Sorry but found this photo

I think there is a pig under all that.
Looks like a cross between a wolf hound and a Shetland pony.

Now I am really interested.  Tell me more more more.

Sorry a tad excited.

 :D

To breed from, these Roughlee Mangalitza Girls are not for the pot.

But some of the future Mangaliza piggies will be.

I can't see sunburn being a problem for those hairy beasties!  They might need shearing though
Lovely old breed, very unusual.

..............

Measure, in inches (easiest while they are eating)
length from middle of ears to root of tail
girth around shoulders tight up to front legs

multiply length by girth and divide by 12 if lean, 11 if meduim and 10 if fat.  The answer is in lbs.

we found it best to send ours for slaughter when they weighed 170 lb (40 x 47 / 11)

This gave a good sized carcass with plenty of meat.  (we had pork and bacon from it)

It took 1 of our pigs 6 months to get to this size and the other three  took 71/2 months.

.............

In that case at 22 weeks ish or 5 and a half months my two are 187lbs and 167lbs or in new money 85Kgs and 76Kgs. I think they may be ready.

I am going to keep them till at the latest September.
I have a couple of issues
1. No trailer (yet)
2. No room in the Freezer.  (We have to purchase the freezer)

We bought a second hand horse box to transport ours.  livestock trailers are so expensive and second hand ones are few and far between.  The horse box does the same job.
We are looking for a new freezer too, for more pork eventually and for the hubbards, I am a member of 'Which' magazine and in their latest tests on chest freezers the fridgidaire ones came out good

The picture shows pork joints from 1/2 a pig to give you an idea of amounts.  You can see the tv remote for a bit of perspective
