Anyone know a pea called Dun?
« on: April 10, 2009, 14:13 »
I got it from the Heritage Seed Library, but don't have any growing instructions. I'm presuming it's a pea, not a bean, but just wondered how tall they grow.

I'm just wondering how come you don't know whether it's a pea or a bean?

It's very probably not in a catalogue, this was the case with the 3 varieties I got when I was a seed guardian.

These varieties are passed on to them from folk who have been saving seed for sometime, generations even. They make a name up to suit, either the family who passed it on to them, or something to describe the plant itself.

All you can do is be prepared for it to grow tall and stake up accordingly as it grows.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you google pea dun there are many references. Seems to be an Australian type for their market and India. Grown in fields and sold in a dry form. Dun is the name of a group of peas, not an individual type.
Plant them and find a good recipe for pea soup.

Thanks :) I got confused trying to Google it. The packet says Pea - Dun, but there are lots of references to dried stuff (which I don't like), so that's probably what it is rather than green peas.

Just looked in my HSL catalogue, and it is a pea - can reach 180cm in height or more.

Hi Jules. It's a long time since you asked the question, but maybe you still want to to what a Dun pea is. Here in Australia, Dun peas (Pisum sativum arvanse) are a field crop grown as green manure or for fodder. They are dug into the soil green and add nitrogen and organic matter on decomposition. Is also cut and and sold in bales to use as a dry mulch.

Blimey Kezz1, that's some first post (especially for delving that far back!)

Well dun!

Didn't exactly delve (as in read all the posts way back), Jay. LOL. Too busy weeding, watering, composting and planting for that! Came across Dun peas on an Ozzie seed site, so googled them and Jules question came up. As I eventually found the answer, thought others may still want to know.  :)
