Beetroot in paper pots
« on: April 09, 2009, 09:42 »
I have started some beetroot seeds in paper pots indoors (about 12 in total). I understand that each seed is actually a collection of seeds.

Each pot now has between 3-4 seedlings at 2" tall. Do these need to be thinnned or not? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are ok left and will eventually push each other apart as the root develops. But they look so over-crowded!

Many thanks in advance

ps. did a quick search for previous posts in this but couldn't find exact question answered

Whppersnapper,
I bought some beetroot plants last year that came in plugs with 3-5 plants in each plug, the instuctions said to separate them, which I did, and they all developed well.
Just take care when handling the young plants, only hold them by the leaves not the roots.
  Hope it goes well.

Regards,

Ah - ok - that's interesting. Thanks.

Hang on though - the whole point of me using the paper pots was to avoid root disturbance! I did a separate batch earlier in the year that were in plastic pots and I transplanted into the ground. I wanted to do the opposite with these and compare them so I know what works best next year.

I think if you leave them you will get more, smaller, crop. If you thin to leave a single one it will be bigger - I prefer smaller for flavour, rather than larger for exhibition!

Ok - so it's a matter of choice in that case! Maybe I'll try a bit of both this year and then see what works best!

We tend to use beetroot mainly for making soup so maybe I'd prefer the larger crop?!

I think you may find the crop volume is about the same... one method gives more smaller beetroot the other gives fewer beetroot but each is larger so both ways crop volume is about the same but individual beetroot size differs.....

Now, if you are not confised - you are doing well.
I'm lost!!
