They will all grow but maybe not as big as they should. Also remember to feed them as they will use the goodness in the compost quite quickly if they are squashed together. Mine get tomatorite.

OK, the perogative of a Newbie is to be able to ask STOOOOPID questions so...

If it's too late to grow garlic now because it needs a cold spell to split, what is against the idea of planting them in the paper pots (described in another thread) then popping those pots into the fridge for a few nights, thereby artificially providing the 'cold spell' before planting outside - almost  reverse of the cold frame idea? If that sounds feasible...how long would the 'cold spell' need to last? 1 night? 4 nights? a week?

Fridge, 2 weeks.
That is what I do.
Would 1 week do? I have no idea, possibly, probably. Search the net.
Why plant in pots then into the fridge?
Just put the cloves in there, then plant the cloves.

It may simply be getting too late in the year to plant.
Garlic are harvested when the leaves turn yellow. That tends to be July/August. It is now April. 2 weeks in a fridge means that you are close to May. Running out of time ??? ???

Did plant some from a supermarket a few years ago and they were successful, they had a couple of weeks in the fridge and I probably planted about this time of year. But at the small cost they were it didn't really matter. :D :D

Where did the garlic come from?
Actually stupid question, you can either plant them or eat them.
That as best I can tell are the only options.

To Kermit:
If your 3 yr old planted them just leave them. They are their plants and if doing all right leave.  :tongue2: :tongue2:

You say some are very close to the surface. Add a little more compost - get the 3 yr old to do it. Will add the depth and will add some additional nutrient (better crop).

Plant them. They do not need to get that cold. Has anyone ever grown garlic that did not split? Maybe in southern europe but doubtful in the UK?

The ones that I planted last spring didn't split, were just like a large spring onion, but garlic flavour!! Lets hope this years (planted in oct) are better!!!!

Also last years were just superarket variety as I had a little space left with my onions so gave it a bash!!!
