Our allotment has a sign saying gate will be locked at 18.00 hrs.  :tongue2:

That is all we have a gate no other security at all
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

our gate is locked all the time, you unlock it to come in and re lock once your in and the same to let yourself back out, seems to work well enough.

we have a sign that asks to keep the gate locked at all times..but in practise this doesnt work. So we all seem to have come to an unspoken understanding that the gates locked at all times after 7pm

Our gates are locked all the time as our plot is a very handy short cut to the high street.  Iron gates with anti climb paint and a padlock.  It doesn't stop thieves but it deters the casual or opportunist thief.

Our gate is not locked just shut and  its  a metal 5 bar gate, easily climbed over or opened. I have been past some nights and its still open.  This is the only way in and out and thankfully theft here has been sporadic. We are all told not to leave valuable tools in sheds and produce just tend to get taken from the plots nearest the gate - for a quick getaway I presume. We have houses on three sides and if they do spot anything our local PC pays a visit but the site is big and wold be easy to miss any goings on on the far side of the plot. It would be nice to think we were protected by a locked gate but can't see that happening.
