broad beans
« on: April 04, 2009, 16:49 »
I'm going to put in some broad beans (the Sutton) - not sure if I actually like them but they're meant to be idiot proof to grow. Do they need to be staked?

the sutton is a dwarf variety and should only get 12 to 18 inches tall so it shouldn't need to be staked

No not usually but if your garden suffers from high winds then a pea stick will stop them blowing over.

I grow The Sutton every year, because my patch is quite exposed.  I don't stake them, but they do suffer from wind-rock sometimes.  I like the pea stick idea - I'll use that, thanks!

Mine popped up yesterday. I thought the mice had eaten them all but luckily there are still 20 in the ground  :) I've not had to stake mine in the past.

never stake mine, and it gets pretty blowie here up north on the coast. Height should be 12-18 inch but mine last year were more like 24-36. If you don't like the beans as they are, make a bean 'n' ham soup, just as good as pea 'n' ham.
