comfrey leaves
« on: April 02, 2009, 19:59 »
I've just cut my first bag of comfrey leaves.

Normally i use it as a compost activator or put it in the rain barrel to make liquid fertiliser.
However i remember a tip for putting comfrey leaves in the potato trench.  Anyone got any thoughts on this and how much benefit it is.

Is there a risk of the comfrey leaves sprouting? I realise you'd have to make sure no root bits are there but could the leaves themselves take root ?
I tend to think not because it dos'ent happen on the compost heap or in the barrel.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

Hi, comfrey leaves are very high in potash so they are good for spuds, also toms. and fruit, so would be good in the trench. Another way with the leaves is to put them in a bin with a pipe at the bottom and a weight at the top ( cover the top of the bin ) you get pure comfrey juice to dilute at about 20 to 1

John recommends that the leaves be allowed to dry for 24 hours before putting them in the trench to ensure they won't sprout. they're such hardy so and so's.

I dug mine up last year as it was growing in the wrong place and put it in a plastic bucket, but as it died off I just forgot about it but this year it seems to be back with a gusto so I'll have to find somewhere permanant for it!

I know that some plants can re-root from leaf cuttings; for example begonias, but I don't know if this is the same for comfrey, but just to be sure I'd do as Trill says and dry them before hand to damage the cells.

As potatoes are a thirsty plant we place a good kilo of cumfrey into an onion sack ,

then place the sack in a water butt , leave for 2 weeks ,

give a good stir ( holding your nose ) ,

we water the cumfrey mixture direct onto the plants , at soil level ,

this way we give the potatoe plants the feed from the mixture,

and also give the plant the water it needs

My comfrey has barely even started this year. A few 2 inch leaves poking through the ground  :(

Its not just me then? I expected to be hacking my way into a forest of the stuff, but the best my 1 surviving clump can muster was a few leaves that the slugs have had.

Its now divided between 14 pots hopefully next year I may get some use out of it.

Everything seems so slow to start this year

We made some comfrey liquid last year and forgot about it. It is still in a container in the shed. Will it still be ok to use? (I presume diluted with water?)

Thanks

I bought six Bocking 14 comfrey root cuttings last autumn.  Two have failed to emerge and the other four only have a few sad leaves on them - and I thought this stuff was indestructible.
