A chicken thats to posh to push.
« on: April 02, 2009, 14:57 »
My brother inherited some 15 or so chickens when a next door neighbor died and gave me 3 in July last year. Two white and one black. The black one and one of the whites have been good layers, even though one of the whites has a tendency to broodiness.
But one of the white chickens has not layd a single egg since we've had her. She is quieter than the other two but does not seem to be ill. We still love her but can anyone shed any light on why she does not lay?

Hi Beano

Welcome to the Hen House :D

Do you have any idea how old they are?

Hi Sarah,

Not really, but my brother did say that none of them are very old and she does not look that old. She has grown some feathers on her legs since we've had her and has an awful lot of toes and spurs. Do you think it could be something to do with inbreeding? If so will she become a sick chick?

I was thinking she might have gone past her best laying wise really :)

Do you have any pictures you could put up we might be able to give you an idea as to what breed they are ?

Other things that may cause them to stop laying are mite's and moulting.
Does she go into the nest box as if she's going to lay?
I had one a few years ago that did that, think it's called a false layer ???

Pics would be good :)

Sarah :)

Sorry unable to send pictures, the file was too big and I do not know how to make it smaller.
She will follow the other two into the coup when they go in to lay.
I think the other two are a legbar cross with the tufty hair style and they could scratch for Britain whereas she hardly scratches at all. She is mush rounder with a small comb compared to the others.
Will find out how to send photos hopefully.
Beano.

I "inherited" 3 last summer.  One of them, a superb Black Rock, hadn't laid an egg since I had her, and she's about 18 months old.  That is until today, and she's laid me a big egg.
She's a bit of a shy bird, not tame like my others, but she is big, black and very beautiful.

This gives me hope, perhaps she'll lay an egg one day.
She is very shy, the other two will rush me when I have scraps for them. She will stand back and wait for me to go. She's always the last out in the morning, standing at the top of the steps to check the garden out before venturing out.
We make sure she does not lose out on treats by scattering some in different directions.
