runner beans in vegetable planters
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:46 »
OH keeps going on and on and on that he wants to grow the runner beans in vegetable planters this year to leave us more room in the garden for other nice things.

Has anyone done this before or can reccomend against doing it.

Thanks
Em

No sure what a vegetable planter is , but you can grow runners in a big pot so it should be ok

I've grown 'em succesfully in a half blue barrel............they took a lot of watering tho' even in that size container
spose it depends on how big your containers are ::)
Can't you grow the 'other nice things' in the planters.......still the same amount of growing space to choose from but i think beans are always better off in the ground.

That's just my opinion tho'........................................

They're very greedy for water, so if you do go down the planter route, make your OH do the watering.  I'll bet they're back in the ground next year, especially if you get a hosepipe ban.

I do hope the weather is as good as this.  :tongue2:

Hi i grew runner beans last year in containers and they grew tall and strong. don't know why (prob because of all the rain we had) they grew really well hardly needed watering unlike the peas. I put some stones  / pebbles in the bottom of the tub and away they went.

Before I got my plot I grew my beans in pots and they did well. Needed a lot of water as already mentioned.
I now grow them on my plot but I grow sweetpeas and sunflowers at the ends of the rows and the bean flowers are pretty as well.  :D
