transplanting leek seedlings
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:29 »
I have grown some leeks from seed. They are now about 3-4" high and i am going to transplant into  3" pots as muntjak advised.

Do i plant them to the depth they are now or shall i plant them a bit deeper as they are beginning to lean over?

Also where should i keep the leeks in pots?

Cheers
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

A little deeper would not hurt. Are you able to get them outside? - cold greenhouse or cold frame, ideally. They don't want to be indoors - it's too warm, but it may shock them to go straight outside if you've had them inside.

Failing a cold greenhouse or frame, get them outside during the day, bring them in at night for a week or so. Then leave them outside.

Leeks are a very hardy plant and don't really need starting in a propagator, but now they are used to the great indoors, they need traeting gently!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As mentioned in other threads, this is how I deal with mine. Seed is planted about 1" apart in cat litter trays after making drainage holes. There is no disturbance of the seedling until it is pencil thick & ready to go in the ground. One tray is sufficient for 96 seedlings. I do two.

Hope photo is good enough to get the idea.

(Yes I know there are gaps, but they are still coming through!)

Digger... I've tried your method too... mine look very like these now - right down to the blue tray! :tongue2:
Sally (N.Ireland) Organic as far as I know!

Plant plenty.  Celebrate success.  (Let selective memory deal with the rest.)

So would you say it is worth moving them from the modules into pots then digger?

It's just i started to worry as they are becoming quite long and whispy.

In future i will definitly go with the cat litter tray. I will aslo go and buy one of those small 3 tier plastic greenhouses at the weekend,

Cheers

They do grow long & whispy, but without seeing them, it's difficult to say whether they are too long & whispy.

If they are crammed in, personally I would tend to pot them up into whatever & give them a bit more space & then harden them off. Mine are in an unheated greenhouse & will go outside on the patio in due course to grow on, (usually when I've run out of room for the bedding plants)!

Darn, just remembered there's a 'sticky' in the 'Welcome to the Forums' Forum, explaining how to do this. If you get lost with my explanation, have a look there - it's got pretty pictures. And you know what they say about pictures & words!
