she can't see
« on: March 31, 2009, 17:04 »

My Buff orpington seems to have lost her sight, she has some fluid coming from her eye and when you give her food clearly can't see it,  just pecks and misses it, she had been fine up to yesterday and is only about 5 months old. Does anyone know what is wrong? or what I should do?
thanks

Hi Speedy

Could she have been pecked or got something in it?

or she has an upper respiratory infection, like mycoplasma -which it does sound like. She will need some antibiotics from the vet to sort her out.
Is she a new hen speedy?

In that case speedy, it could be mycoplasma and/or this may be a recurrence of a previous infection of due the stress of a new home. She will need a short course on antibiotics.
Hope she gets well soon!

I'd suggest antibiotics for them all.  If one bird has mycoplasma they all will have it .

Is she swollen around the eye?

If so and the eye is weeping clear or colored liquid or bubbling/foaming then she has Mycoplasma infection or Fowl Coryza (Haemophilis) which will need antibotics. Mine have it too is it the time of year for it or what!
Cheers,

Paula

I think the problem there are unscrupulous suppliers out there and a lot of birds are being moved around as demand now is high for POL birds. Sometimes illness/infection isn't obvious till a week or so later. :(

Thanks everyone, I got some antibiotics and she seems to be back to her perky eating self, which is a great relief, just need her to lay some eggs now.
