ex bats food levels and malting question
« on: March 30, 2009, 20:45 »
hi i ve just managed to get my first hens from a battery farm i was told they are 18 months old having spent there first year laying they are now going though the malting period and are having a resting period from laying.I bought 10 hens[warrens] and they actually look great showing new feathers and no signs of being in a battery farm.i am feeding them layers pellets and they seem to be eating 2 kilos a day between them is this ok or will i just be maki ng them fat? also how long roughly does the egg resting period last? one seems to be laying and i guess they are all the same age

The molting takes a lot out of the birds and they need a fair bit of food to regenerate themselves.  Some poultry spice in the pellets would be good for them at this time.  They should come back into lay soon after molting.  Read other posts on this site to find out a bit more in general what happens and other tips during molting.
