Potatoe Questions
« on: March 30, 2009, 19:37 »
I've just bought some seed potatoes ready to plant the weekend(Pentland javelin&maris piper). Now is it best to cut them in half or not. Also is it essential that i add manure to the soil?
   Cheers

The soil needs to be reasonably fertile for potatoes.

The current advice is not to cut seed potatoes as it can easily let in infection and the potato will rot before it grows.  If you do however, decide to cut them it's best to allow the cut surface to dry out for a day before planting it.

If you do cut them, make sure that you have at least 3 eyes on each bit of tuber. The old gardeners used to rub fresh wood ash onto the cut surface to help seal it. Personally i do not advise any one to cut the tubers unless they are very large.
