If it is a blackcurrant, I found a tiny one growing out the side of our old patio 4 years ago.  Moved it over by the fence and last summer I picked 10lbs of blackcurrants off it!!!!

I didn't think that schroom looked like an ink cap, but I'm no expert.  wE get shaggy ink caps here and they are long thin tops, but don't know if there's a non shaggy variety, sorry!!    :(

Have a look at this site and go to the keys.
 http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/

There are dozens of similar fungus. I do not think it is an ink cap.

Well if it's the same as the ones growing in my compost heap I hope they're not poisonous as mine are all gone and I strongly suspect the ducks have munched them!

Definately not an ink cap no striations on the cap.
Most likely suspect is Anelleria semiovata very common in dung and manure.

i would advise that if you can't identify it (which noone else seems to be able to, either!) then you shouldn't think about eating it - you can get very very poorly or dead from eating the wrong mushrooms.  :(

(even experts can make mistakes, too)

as for the berry, which it is definitely a berry or currant - pick it out using the trowel so you get the biggest amount of soil around the rootball and put it in the ground where you want it - against a fence and in bright sunshine is the best idea, then you can train it up the fence.

There are Ink Caps and Shaggy Ink Caps. Shaggy Ink Caps are the tall shaggy ones which are edible and not easily confused with others.

But you only make a bad mistake once  ;)
Been collecting funghi for about 15 years and only had one problem with a Shaggy Parasol which can cause a reaction in some people when comsumed with alcohol.
There are only a dozen or so really nasty ones out there and most of them are not that common, on the bright the top ten edible ones are easy to identify once you have been shown what, where and when to look for.
Don't rely on photos (even though Roger's are great) as shrooms vary hugely depending on the weather conditions i.e. rain, sun and temperature.

Shaggy Ink Caps are edible when very young and the flesh is pure white.
There are 24 species of Ink Cap in Britain and some do look similar when they are immature. The common mistake that people make when collecting shaggy Ink Caps is to confuse them with Common Ink Caps. Not a good mistake to make as they contain a chemical similar to Antabuse that is given to alcoholics to stop them drinking and produces heart palpitations, seating and vomiting, not good.

Its not a Magic Mushroom then?

You sound very knowledgeable Argaric.  I think that River Cottage sometimes has a lot to answer to when they pick fungi to eat.  I think they should mention you need an expert with you when you do this.  There have been two well highlighted incidents just last year where people ate the wrong fungi and paid for it, and I can't help thinking its programmes like that, that encourage people to go out and try them.

I'm ok cause I don't like them anyway, but I'd feel dreadful if I harmed my partner.  He wouldn't be too happy either ha ha
