I could have a double-sided munty frame (arch style) and wander up and down underneath. I wonder???

Daft idea?

The thing about the munty frame is the 'slope' is south facing as the plants grow towards it...

.. if you had a double sided one you might have to spend a lot of time enticing and tieing in the beans growing on the wrong side of the tracks

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

have to point out tho' that once the beans are at the top and really well grown the slightest wind and those arches start to wobble about.
I had mine growing beans from side to side across the arch(rather than just over the sides of the arch) and had to prop them  up with angled bits of wood to stop the whole lot blowing over sideways.
So it's a really good idea but please keep an eye on them if it gets windy

Have to admit I was wondering about that, as I once removed the twisted remains of one from beneath a clematis armandii. Ok I know that was asking a lot of the thing, but it was against a wall in a sheltered location, not standing in the middle of an allotment site. . .
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

A few guy ropes suitably placed could be in order to stop the wobbles.
I'd ask on freecycle before buying  ;)

"Throw it out!" my wife tells me. "Do you really need it?"

Oh bother....I threw it out. I knew it would come in handy one day  :(

I had a medium sized frame-tent. Had it for years and years until it leaked so badly it was beyond repair. (25 years of good service) It had stood up to gales and countless kids leaning all over it...and so many down-pours. Easily tall enough to stand up in and more than 8' x 12'

My old frame-tent (minus the canvas) would have made an excellent arch for runner beans and fitted beautifully over my path!

Learning from this.... Don't throw it out... hide it, move it and...... OK - somethings just have to go but I wish I had hung onto it for just a few more weeks!  :(

Son's planning on having a humungous crop so Im sure that wont happen as the ton weight of the beans will weigh it down (so he says  :D )

That's life........... swings and round-abouts. It can't be sunshine all the way or the crops would shrivel!  ;)

Just read the thread title properly.. "string instead of canes".... I knew it said that really but...

when we do use canes it is hard to get away without making use of a bit of string here and there unless....

you cut up your old tights  ::) they make beautiful ties (not round the neck sort) - Great for securing all sorts of things as well as tender stems. They are very tough and very strong.

Recycle  ;)
