Calling all 'Garlic Lunateers', coo-eeeeeee
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:04 »
*Waves*     :D

How's it all going with the garlic planting eh?

My attempt was thwarted at the first hurdle, they were the only things that I planted in the ground instead of pots and as a result was dug up and gnawed by

THIS pesky little critter

Hope you had better luck xx

I planted back at end of November just before you lunatics - sorry lunateers  :D :D. They had a very slow start due to cold, frost and snow but are coming along now.
Better luck this year.

Planted most of mine last year and coming along well, even those that I have no idea where they came from

Then today I was wandering round the local town and they had an Italian market. ::)
The Italian market had a stall selling fresh garlic. ::)
Nice big (3"), green, SMELLY things. :tongue2:
£1 each
Selected the biggest :D
Now in the fridge to get  a "cold" spell, say week or two, then into a patch of the garden. ??? ???

Going to plant another lot this week like I did last year and crop as "Green Garlic", nice mild flavour and you use the hole plant  ::)

I also planted garlic in autumn and have some strong growth. I planted shallots and onion sets at same time. Shallots doing well, nice and strong, but some of the onions are loose in ground, have grown at least 6ins tall but roots aren't very firm. Anybody else had this, will they firm up or do I need to take action ?

Mine were also planted in the Autumn. I was very naughty and planted garlic bought from my local supermarket (I stuck it in the fridge for a few weeks before planting - not intentional, it's just where I keep my garlic!). It's Spanish garlic so didn't really expect it to do well but the cloves I planted have all sprung up and are looking lovely and healthy :) (*touch wood*!!!)

I planted some in my previous allotment in August and they are coming a long a treat.  I didn't both digging them up, because I wanted to leave them for the newbies (gives them something to look forward to).  I put some fresh garlic in my new allotment (next door but one to my old one) in December, and everyone is coming up a treat as well.

But Poultrygeist, I thought .............changing was a prerequisite for joining this forum - or have I joined the wrong one again??????    PS my garlic, planted at the end of last winter is coming on a real treat but the onions planted at the same time are, well disappointing to say the least, think I might plant something else in the bed to stop both the onions who are growing from  ;) feeling lonely.
Talking to the microwave,I ask you wall, what is the world coming to?
Blesséd are the cracked for tis they who let in the light!

We need some scientific data for the comparison.

If you send all your garlic to me I'll test it to destruction. :)

But, be careful - depending on your postman's views he might refuse to ever deliver your post ever again. ;)

I'm sure they're very cosmopolitan round these parts. They have sea salt and balsamic vinegar on their chips and everything  :)

Wow!! Not so long ago, when I lived in Shropshire not France, my daughter did cooking at school - choice either cottage pie or spag bol.  Neither recipe had garlic in so she chose cottage pie and took her own garlic to put in.  The teacher tried to refuse to let her put garlic in and even tried the 'not traditional' tack but then had problems because the spag bol kids also had garlic and she didn't want them using it either.  Discovering that all the kids had garlic she moaned but allowed it.  Cassie said to her "but we use garlic in everything in our house.  Mind you, it doesn't half make my mom's pavlova taste a bit funny!"  The children laughed, the teacher failed to understand that it was a joke.  Obviously where you live is far more cosmopolitan than where we were.

Must try balsamic vinegar on me next lot of frites. mmmmmmmmmm
 :D :D :D :D
