Where sells happy chicks in Durham?
« on: March 26, 2009, 16:55 »
Hi everyone I'm new to this site but I think it might be the very thing I need!!  I'm very lucky to be being given an Omlet Eglu chicken house and am looking to buy our first three chickens in a couple of weeks - but I don't know where to get them from near Durham!

I have found Meadowsweet near me but I contacted them and they seemed reluctant to give me any advice or information so I've given up on them really.  I would like to get my chickens from somewhere helpful and friendly so I can feel confident that the chickens have been well cared for - any ideas??  Thanks!

Meadowsweet sell some really good hybrid birds.

Rangers are lovely natured egg layers lively and friendly.

Check out their web site and then go along and get some

I contacted them a few times but I'm still none the wiser as to how long in advance I'd need to order, if they have all the breeds all the time etc etc - I've asked the same questions 3 times and got nowhere!  All they said is that all the breeds are the same (which I understood was not the case) and I would have to order from them or go to one of their agents if I wanted to choose.  No info as to which breeds the agents have available, or when we could go, if we would need appointments etc, which were all the questions I asked

It sounds as if you were talking to the cleaner or the agents children rather than someone who knows how they do business.

If they are close to you go over and find out what the birds are like and what they have available just now.

There are two agents in the Durham area

I got my first three birds from Meadowsweet in Shincliffe. There a lovely birds, very healthy and handsome. They are Black Stars. If you phone up and speak to either the Mr or Mrs I found they were less than talkative, but were able to tell me what they had coming in and when. I got them at 18 weeks and they were all in lay by 22 weeks and have laid all winter. They are nice tempered friendly birds. I paid £9 each last August. . I also get birds from a smallholding in Northumberland but could be a long trek for you. PM me if you want to chat - I'd be happy to go with you.
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.
