I've grown Gardener's Delight for the past few years but I don't recommend it because none of the tomatoes have ever made it into the kitchen! :D

whatever type you grow they will be far better than those things they churn out in tesco etc
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

Best reccommendation there is! Just grow more  ;)

Now I've got my plot, I will definitely be doing that, but then they'll have to last the whole journey home. I don't rate their chances much. ;)

Me and peapod have that problem with peas. I have to grow so many so that the others can have a couple each.

I'm growing about 20 different varieties of tomato this year, I got the seeds from an 'Amish' grower in America, some i've never heard of,  should be intresting!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Does anyone remember seeing a TV program some time ago with Rayond Blanc, he did a taste test with tomatoes grown in his own kitchen gardens, I think Marmande came out top?
I've been growing it here (amongst half a dozen other varieties) and think it's lovely: paper thin skins, lots of flesh inside and loads of flavour, not too acidic, perfect for pasta sauces and cooking but perhaps a bit big for a salad (one tomato is easily enough for 2-3 people!)  I'd recommend giving them a try  ;)

Cheers,
Wayne.

I've gone over the top again far too many varieties  so share plants with neighbours but will be trying a few of amish paste in the hope I can make some sauce to put in the freezer - I blame the pictures in the seed catalogues I'm sure if they were not there I wouldnt buy so many and grow senisbly :D

I've gone over the top again far too many varieties

My mother and I, between our own purchases, swapping varieties with friends, and accumulating open packets for a couple of years now, have 15 named varieties, plus a mixed pack she impulse bought on the 'net of up to 50 American heirloom varieties, which we won't be opening this year because it'll keep better sealed.  I'm thinking I'll be lucky to find room for thirty plants, which would only be two of each!
