Growing old spuds
« on: March 19, 2007, 20:24 »
Hi,

I just found a bag of supermarket potatoes sprouting all over in one of my cupboards. I think they're been there some weeks as they have gone a bit soft. I was about to put them in the compost bin, but thought instead of perhaps growing them.

I've heard potaotes can be grown in tall containers and do have a plastic bin insert which might do the job. Would these soft spuds be OK to grow?

I would put them on the compost heap but then again if you have the time and space go for it greenie
feed the soil not the plants

Yes, they'll grow okay although very long drawn sprouts may not survive the ordeal of planting.   Might be better to knock them off and let other stronger sprouts form in full light.

Stick em in they will do you proud. Dad says during the war (Neopalonic I expect !) they would plant thick spud peelings and they would grow. We are far to fussy.

The only problem with planting your supermarket potatoes is the possibility of introducing disease.  Production of seed potatoes is very strictly controlled by DFRA.
