Cabbages all gone to seed
« on: March 25, 2009, 18:03 »
The cabbage plants I bought last November time have all gone to seed- there were 12 plants and not one has got a heart- I looked at them this afternoon and the ´heart´was really a seed head coming on each of them :(  Now if you knew just how much I loved cabbage, you can understand I am really upset- cabbage is my fav. vegetable- I´d choose cabbage over a bit of steak any day
The 12 broccoli plants turned into 11 cauli and just 1 broccoli and the cauli is, touch wood, ok (fingers crossed)  I have eaten a few of the flowers as they are fist size and they have been lovely.  But what went wrong with the cabbage????????????

Was the ground around them really firm?

I honestly can´t say if it were firm or not- it wasn´t dug over once the plants were in.  The soil is quite ´sandy´ here.  I had trouble last year with cabbage not growing too.  The first year I was here I planted cabbage seed and grew my own- I even had to move them when the builder started work early and I only lost one to seed!

maybe something to do with the spell of bad weather you had....might have stressed them and made them run to seed :(

Mumofstig has a point -- stressed plants do run to seed (Makes me wonder about us humans, too .... ::)

Hi, sounds to me that those cabbages are caulies. November is awfuly late to plant a cabbage, but a caulie going in then would overwinter and start a small sedhead now.

What about overwintering for spring cabbages?  My money is probably on the sandy soil being too light and dry for them.

Are you growing local Spanish varieties? If you are trying to grow with UK varieties it is probably too warm through the winter.
