What Can I Grow in These ?
« on: March 24, 2009, 08:29 »
Hi All,

The OH works at the local co-op and she has been getting me the old flower buckets (Free of course)  ;)

They are 10" across the top, 7.5" across the bottom and 10" deep.

My question is would these be ok for Strawberries.?
And, would they be big enough for the Toms in the greenhouse. I'm thinking of cutting the bottoms off and putting them in growbags, or would they be ok without the growbags.?

I've cut holes in the bottoms already for drainage.

Thanks in Advance for advice.

Steve

They'd be ideal for toms. The pots I use are slightly smaller. I just fill them with growbag compost & away you go. Strawberries no probs either.

Peppers, chillis, cucumbers, aubergines, the list is endless!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks Dave,

Do you think I would get away without the growbags underneath the pots for the Tomatoes.?

Or is it better to have the growbags there for watering and feed in the pot.?

I don't see why you can't use them for strawberries.  My mum uses hanging baskets, and the plot that I've just took over has them also in hanging basets.

I use these pots for my toms every year and nothing to it.  I've also used them for cukes and peppers.  I also use the buckets that has the bird seed/peanuts.  As long as you put holes in the bottom they're perfect.

In my greenhouse, I have a path down the middle and gravel on either side to stand my pots on.

I just tip the growbag medium into to pots & that's it.

I stand each in a cheap washing up bowl & water/feed into that, rather than direct into the pot.

Oh & if you have any spare and are coming this way.................... :D

I grew toms very successfully in them 2 years ago (last year the blight got em!).  Gardeners Delight in Multipurpose compost, watered from the top (with tomorite when I remembered) and stood against a south facing wall on the paving path.  Romped away ...  The only problem I had was I did have to water every morning; the block buckets got hot and dried out quickly - which meant 'persuading' help when I was away. :nowink:
