Your worst weed?
« on: March 23, 2009, 10:34 »
Reading about Poultrygeists experience (and others too) Im curious as to what people have to put up with in the veg plot.
I have mares tail, bindweed and docks.
I have been ruthless with all, but turning over a 5ft x 12 or so ft bed yesterday (last turned over two weeks ago and apparently fully weeded or so I thought) I was astonished to find at least 50 baby docks trying to come up. It made me realise that we are fighting a big battle. Ive yet to see signs of mares tail and bindweed coming back..(Im sure it wont be long!)

Tell me your worst and how do you deal with?

mmm.....??  ::) Docks, Bindweed, couch, Mares..... they're all a b**ger. I'm affraid that my worst weed award goes to  - Ground Elder!  The only thing is to keep the soil well cultivated and continue to pull any bits out when it re appears.

At home it's what I call barren strawberry, because that's what I once identified it as and I can't remember what it's really called.  It sends out runners like strawberries and has taproots that snap off easily. It just keeps on coming back!
It's all over the front garden as well as the borders, the fruit cage, and around the base of the sheds and is still coming up on the edge of veg patch by the path!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

On my previous plot, my worst was bindweed, then when we took over the other half, it was, at least I think it was, chickweed - that spread like anything.

We then got rid of that plot and moved next door but one, and now it seems to be dock (bindweed, etc, seems to have gone)

ground elder and docks

apparently dock seeds can lie dormant in the ground for 70 years.
which means it's a complete waste of time trying to get rid of them.

I renamed my plot Haiti, after the number of baby docs springing up over the last few weeks (I had originally called it the docklands). I wonder if the winter had anything to do with doc seeds germinating then? Far far more than ever before. I started eating ground elder (a bit tough but actually really tasty), since I found out that the Romans introduced it the the UK as a food crop. Another thing the Romans did for us...

marestail, bindweed & chickweed  >:(

Bindweed definitely comes up mid-end May AFTER you have planted out all your crops

Marestail, bindweed, couch and docks.

Although my winter/spring weeding sessions have it looked pretty good right now, you know that in the coming weeks they will all spring back to life.

Ground elder in one section of border on the back garden.
I may take drastic action this year and bring out the big guns. Dug most of it out last year, but it goes under the fence to next doors. Combined effort from both houses needed.

Trouble is I know where it came from. The MIL, gave us some big daisy type flowers along with the ground elder entwined with it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Allotment, it has to be couch grass.

Bindweed for us, although we also get a lot of that sticky ball weed that the cats get covered in - don't know what it's called.

Goose grass is what I know it as. Reasonably easy to control.

Dandelions annoy me as they come back from other people's seeds as soon as you clear the place.  Couch grass is a right pain to remove too.

Creeping buttercup is my nightmare this year.

It's burdock; I have a lot of that too. If I had enough dandelions to go with it I'd try making dandelion and burdock.  8)
