First green crop of the year
« on: March 22, 2009, 18:27 »
Hi every one, I'm new here but not new to veg growing.

I've just taken over an old plot and of course the first  crop of the year is nettles :o)

So far we've had soup , of course, curry, Italian gnoochi dumplings, pasta bake and  cheese and nettle scones. Pius the occasional cup of tea but thats a bit of an equired taste.

Have any of you any other weed beating dishes?

Been there done that a few years ago now,  and if I remember rightly  it was  foul, and a waste of a good nettle ;O)

I didn't get past the soup, it was very tasty though and I liked the idea of revenge on nettles :D

Hi we had our first crop of the year yesterday (Sunday)
It was small Broad Beans about the size of my finger and they were lovely. ;)
It's better to be over the Hill than under it!!

Quite pleasant, if you like spinach-type greens.  They take other flavours quite nicely, too, although they're quite palatable with a bit of onion and butter.

A few of the older members like a few nettles around sheds because the kids stay away. They use them as a deterant.

At a farmers market in Arad, Romania, we saw them selling nettles and elderflowers  to people that live in flats in a city. Imagine seeing nettles as a crop

I eat nettle leaves when I'm camping, as a snack around the camp fire. just wave them over the heat of the fire til they start to wilt and chew the leaves off. The heat oxidises the sting so they don't hurt. Then you can use the stalks to make string to tie up the plants or for whipping a handle.....

I'll get my coat........
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

no nutritional value in grass -  thats why cows n sheep have to eat so much of it  :)

For your information and delectation, grass seed carries 0% VAT as it is considered to be part of the food chain, ie cows eat grass and we eat cows and their 'by products'.
