I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

For the best quality blade don't go for Stainless.

One good quality knife, widely available is the 'Opinel ' . Made in France not Sheffield, avaiable in various sizes and has a lock ring rather than a spring to hold it open.

I used to have a wonderful sharp knife given to me by a Bosnian shepherd - made from scythe steel with a cow horn handle. Sadly I've lost it somewhere on the way.

Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I agree completly with celjaci, Opinel are really good blades, you could perform surgery with mine.

Top tip! remember to lock off the blade each time you open it, or it could have your finger off!!!

buck do a good stainless pocket knife, but hells bells it's expensive!!!

Hope you don't mind, but I've changed the title of your posts to Knives, because in the future if someone was to put into the search a query on Knives, your thread wouldn't appear!  :)

the standard opinel blades are of carbon steel, which hold a very good edge, but the can go rusty if not kept clean and dry.
stainless steel blades will not rust, and will be ok if they are not cleaned straight away, but they generally dont hold a sharp edge as long.

Opinel for me too. Before the events of 11 September, 2000 I used to carry a small folding knife with me all the time (hand luggage on aeroplanes too) as I think that at one time a blade of less than 10cm didn't come under various offensive weapons legislation. I bought it because it was cheap and because I wouldn't mind if it ever got confiscated when abroad. It never did. Still going strong. Takes a really sharp edge, and once dried a wipe with an oily rag keeps it rust-free.

I was given a small pen knife from my grandfather. Mother of pearl handle and a short (2 inch) blade that wasn't stainless steel but some funny metal 'i got it from tha' war' he told me. I only ever had it sharpened once.

No idea where it is now... never had a good knife since.
