red cabbage & butterfly
« on: March 18, 2009, 21:31 »
Are red cabbage as attractive to the cabbage white butterflies? or does the red colouring confuse them. ???
because space is getting tight i am thinking of putting a row in a narrow bed which will be for flowers from next autumn....but there's enough time to grow a crop before it's needed. Trouble would be i can't net there.

need to do some serious reorganising if butterflies aren't fussy >:(

I don't know, but the only cabbage I grew last year was red, and I didn't have any problems, however, the bloke opposite grew some white cabbages and they were absolutely covered in caterpillars.

It could have just been good luck though.

I think butterflies are attracted by the smell of the leaves which they get through their feet  ???

Sorry butterflies still go for red cabbage - I've had the holes to proove it!

Actually there were only holes in the outer leaves , the cabbages were still usable

ah, but in winter you could leave the red cabbages without the netting as apparently the pigeons are not attracted to red cabbage or sprouts, or so I've been told - I haven't tested the theory

Somebody has obviously not told our pigeons, as they attack any brussel plants left uncovered!!

i grew red brussels last year. No caterpillers or pidgeon damage. Green cabbage and brussels within yards were covered in caterpillers.
