How much stuff do you grow?
« on: March 18, 2009, 17:15 »
Im curious (having read someone planting just 2 garlic bulbs)  just exactly how much of each thing people grow. I know it all depends on space available and what you like but if your plot/veg patch was a pie, what sort of slice size do you give up to each group.

Taken a quick look at my patch and I think mine is/will be around this...

30% Garlic / Onion / Shallots
20% Spuds / Corn
20% Beans / Peas
20% Brassicas
10% Squashes / Courgettes

What length is understood as a "row" (Im growing at home and a row is probably not the same)

Im worried ive not planted enough garlic having done 10 bulbs...  ::)

Think I'll have a panic there's not enough space and see If I can steal another patch of lawn.  ;)

This year first time tried spuds so it goes like this.....

30% spuds....taking too much room...won't do so many next year ::)
30% corn, leeks, pickling onions& gherkin & garlic (2 bulbs gave 18 cloves...more than enough!)
30% early peas then brassicas
10% runners and lettuce
 :) :)
But tomatoes, aubs, peppers, cues & chilli in greenhouse, so not counted in 'pie'
My row is 12ft...cos that's how long my beds are

I usually get too enthusiastic, and grow far too much, then can't cope with the glut.  So this year I'm being sensible, and sowing in small quantities, but hopefully better spread throughout the year.  I have a half plot just  now and its adequate for the 2 of us.  I'm hoping, for example, that one row each of caulis, broccoli, cabbage, spinach will do us, plus a good few rows of parsnips and carrots, and loads of leeks.  Trying squash this year for the first time.  and have sown about 15.  Always small quantities of salad ingredients turning over with repeat sowings.

Our first year of dividing up the garden and including the greenhouse, so in terms of groundspace probably:

20% Garlic / Onion / Shallots
25% Spuds / Corn
20% Beans / Peas
5% Brassicas
10% Squashes / Courgettes
20% Tomatoes/aubergines/peppers

Our garden's quite small and divided into beds with stone paths, so a horizontal row is 6'. A vertical row is closer to 8'.

this year I'm guessing:

40% spuds - love them so much, always wish I planted more
20% onions and garlic
10% dwarf beans and peas
10% carrots and parsnips
10% salad
10% trying new stuff, this year it's sweetcorn, celery, maybe leeks

not counted toms, peppers, herbs in greenhouse

not counted fruit, I grow lots of fruit and have a new apple tree on order

I don't know proportionately but about 150+ cloves of garlic, we love it! 150 leeks, a minimal amount of cabbages to keep the allotment head happy. A lot of spuds - that's as specific as I can be.

I always plan to grow lots of potatoes & onions (staple foods) and a bit of everything else to make it interesting.  It took some thinking of how to work it out, but I'd see this as my pie:

20% potatoes (all varieties)
25% of which 60% are onions/20% garlic/15% leeks/5% shallots0
15% brassicas (cabbage, swede, caulis, brussels, broccolli, turnips, kale etc)
15% squashes (courgettes/marrows/summer & winter squash)
20% summer veg (sweetcorn/LOTS of tomatoes/chillis/peppers/celery/peas/beans)
3% root veg (mainly carrots & parsnips, some beetroot)
2% miscellaneous group (salad stuff/spinach & other like herbs, chicory etc)
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Can't give you percentages, but it's something like....

200 feet of peas
250 Spuds
100 Sweetcorn
40 Sprouts
39 Asparagus
32 foot double row runner beans
32 foot double row climbing French beans
32 foot "Hedge" of Autumn Bliss raspberries

You've probably got the picture. Yes it's too much for us, but I like growing & there's always neighbours & Church coffee mornings!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When there's no space left on the allotment I've got enough to feed two households and preserve gluts.

Don't do maths  :D

I'm in my garden, so I just grow fruit really, I've got just over 30 shrubs now, along with some herbs, about a square metre, and some garlic, about the same, maybe 30 cloves.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Like most grow your owners i know i am never keen to disgard good plants even though i already have too many,so now im (trying) to grow successionally? through the year and not have crops going off because ive got too much to use at one time, but i will still probably try to squeeze some extra plants in somewhere.

I've got a herb patch and a garlic patch which are each about 8 foot x 6 foot.
I grow squashes near, in and over compost bins.

Bottom picture shows half the top plot. one covered in snow and one fully dug over.

http://growingyourownveg.blogspot.com/2009/03/dig-ja-vu.html

Top plot this year:
25% spuds
25% Tomatoes (grown outside) and Sweetecorn
25% Brassicas various.
25% Onions and beans. Plus catch crops in between some sowings.

Bottom plot 1/2 plot.
60% fruit bushes fruit trees (Cordon) & Strawberries
20 Asparagus plants
Bean frames
This leaves me with about 20% of a ½ plot for succession sowing roots like carrots and beetroots.
No peas this year.  I don't get on with them.  Much of mine had maggots in them last year.  A lot of fuss for nothing in the end.  I’ll go back to them next year but I’ll rely on Mr Birdseye this year, He does a stand up job.

Salads go in half barrels around the plot and I have a double green house full of chillies,  peppers & aubergines and I’m taking a shot at Lemongrass too.

So who is going to grow Bulb fennel?  I’ve got a little room left so I’ll give it a go.  Expecting a complete failure so i'll be happy with any other result. :)
