Total newby to all this but got a water butt over 9 months ago and it's full but has gone stagnant, can I still use it in the garden or should I throw it out and start again?

I am sure it will do no harm to the plants but unless you empty it completly and clean it out it will continue to be unpleasant all Summer long.

But is there a way to stop them going smelly.............it defeats the object if the rain i've collected over the winter has to be thrown away cos it's so smelly

keep the lid on!
you'll not find anything to stop it going smelly except things that stop it being good...

you could swish it round with a broom to get the stagnation off the side and bottom, then that'll all go out on the plants and the new stuff will replace the nasty-smelling stuff.
if that makes any sense.

keeping the water moving is the only way to stop stagnation.

I'd get rid of it myself as it will only keep getting worse and slimier. As suggested, scrub it out well and start fresh. A few drops only of liquid bleach from time to time will keep things fresh without hurting the plants or soil, but best to simply keep it covered and in regular use.

It says on the tin that a little drop of Jeyes fluid will keep butts sweet, I think that refers to water butts and not peoples butts :D :D :D

Maybe a nosy mouse or rat has dropped in it and drowned.  That would stink to high heaven!!!!
I had a mouse drop in my spare watering can, which was filled day or so before, ready to be greenhouse temperature.  Yeuk!  Mind you, consumption of my seed trays dropped after that, so it must have been the breadwinner.  Never found a nest of little 'uns though.

I had a dead bird in mine, no idea how long it had been there but it was really unpleasant I can tell you. So it was cleaned our with Jeyes and now has a lid on it with a hole for the water only to go into it.

:( Sounds like something has died in there or a load of vegetable matter has settled to the bottom if it smells bad - my water butt never gets any special treatment, and the lid has long gone during some gale force winds but the water has been fine.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Hi

O/H was reading a forum and the ladies cat had vanished. Sadly he was found in the neighbours water butt  :(

The lid had been left propped on top and not locked down, they think kitty jumped up and flipped in, being trapped by the lid and drowned.

So, please keep the lids secure, as dead things in water butts are not nice. :(
