This is our first year on the plot. It needed clearing and thought the spuddies would be best bet - being as we did'nt get the plot till November and its ginormous
firsts in tubs - Swift and Winston on the plot
seconds - Marfona, Winston and Anya
                mains - Cara
Do any of you have experience of Winston?- we were sent these instead of Swift from our 2nd order at Kings  - also Marfona. Never tasted them - just ordered on recommendation.

Just Kestrel, grew them last year and thought they were delish, plus very little slug damage.

However found out Sunday that the Allotment secretary didn't order enough and I haven't got any, can't say I'm happy as I have been asking every week for 3 or 4 weeks only to be told don't worry, we'll get round to it soon enough.  I bet all the old retired blokes who are there every single day got theirs though.

Any suggestions as to where I might get some, my local Wilkinsons doesn't do Kestrel, neither does my local independant shop.

Lee, have you tried Unwins? The catalogue I had listed Kestrel I'm sure. Can't remember the price though. Google?

What varieties are people growing this year?
Mine are...

1st early: Bonnie Dundee
2nd early:Edgecote Purple
Main: Dark Red Norland

Quality choice of potatoes :D

Thanks Iain - The potatoes that arrived were in A1 condition, and arrived so quickly JBA have to be the best seed potato supplier out there - great value and some lesser known varieties to which am looking forward to eating.  Will come back to you next year I think too.  I have planted the Bonnie Dundee already - they produced plenty of eyes for chitting and were nice and firm.
Can you tell I am a JBA convert?

Rocket
Maris Piper

and the freebies that Scabs let us know about - are they Hunters?

Last year I grew pentland javelin and King Eddies, but the wife didn't like the taste of the javelin and I didn't get a good yield off the eddies, so I am having a change this year.

Grew Vales Emerald last year, very good crop, plentiful for the limited
amount I planted... they came as a free gift,
think and this is from memory they are a cross between maris peer/piper
(not sure which) and charlotte, taste wise slighly waxy and yet creamy..
very nice tattie..... forgot to order them this year..still always next season...
dare not order more...already got 6 varieties..and OH ! say no more  ::)  ;)

hope that helps Ice....

Earlies: Swift and Rocket
Main: Maris Piper

I planted four rows of Swift last year and did not get round to digging up the last row to July and they were great for chips  :)

Will spray for blight this year as we have had two years in a row and we did not get a large crop of mains cos we had to cut the green bits (can't remeber what they called) down to save the crop

Regards,
  Aragric

I look very closely at what they grow at National Trust properties.   After all, they employ a large number of gardeners.   A popular choice of first early which apparently bulks up very quickly is Lady Christl.   Because it was extremely popular at Wisley, where they sell 2.5kg for £4.50, it was out of stock.   It then came into stock again when I went 10 days ago, but the potatoes had not sprouted, so since it was virtually time to sow them - middle of March - I did not invest my £4.50 this year.   Desiree works well for flavour and yield but I have chalky soil (alkaline) at my allotment and it is very prone to scab.   Probably I ought to grow it as my alkaline soil means I have no hope of getting a first prize for my potatoes in the local show against non-alkaline competition which gets no scab.

Well I'm growing Accent.  I've only got a veg. plot in the garden so I stick to one first early and that looked like the best bet from my local independent garden centre.

Rocket were full of holes when I grew them.  Pentland Javelin has always done well for me but I fancied a change.  I would have tried Swift or Sharpe's Express but they weren't available to buy as individual tubers and its a waste me buying a 3Kg bag.

Oh for the space to grow more.  Specially as well all like our spuds.
