Compost tumbler
« on: March 16, 2009, 14:38 »
I have been thinking of a compost bin for sometime and finally short listed the tumbler. The Tumbleweed  composter is on offer for  85 quid. Has anyone used this before. The manufactures claim that it'll make good quality compost in 3 to 4 weeks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

I have a very similar one given by a friend who didn't want it and now I understand why!
1. You have to fill it right up, which takes some doing unless you generate loads of waste regularly.
2. I'm not organised enough to remember to turn it every day.
3. It's very heavy and awkward to turn when it's full.
4. It takes much longer than 21 days to make compost in my experience.
5. There is no way for the worms to colonise it (and subsequently get into your soil).
6. It's awkward to empty out.

I use my dalek shaped bins and only put stuff in the tumbler when all other space has been used up.
S.i.t.g.
