Potato minitubers.
« on: March 16, 2009, 14:01 »
Looking for information:

I have just received my minitubers and have heard conflicting versions of what to expect in the first year.
One version is that they will be the same as any other seed potato in terms of yield etc and the other is that they are only for growing next seasons seed potatoes.

Any clarification would be most welcome.

I think you should get a yield just like ordinary tubers, it isnt advisable to save your own seed anyway as it can spread disease

Thanks anyway , but that is what I said, one of the two conflicting versions, what I need is definitive answers.

Cos i've nothing better to do i been reading more and it seems to me, that there are many sizes of micro or mini tubers....from about 5g upwards. These tiny ones are the ones they 'grow on' to make seed potatoes.
Once they get to the size that alan roman and others are selling about 25g(?) they are same as ordinary seed potatoes.

You could always PM Iain@JBA he's the seed potato man to give you a difinative answer :)

Thank you Stigsmum,  that is a bit more definitive !

""Mini-tubers range in size from 1 inch to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Because they are planted whole, the need for cutting and treatment is eliminated. They are packaged 10 in a bag which will yield a crop of 20 to 30 pounds of delicious, full-size potatoes.""

I got these from Alan  Romans, and they are not that much smaller than the seed potatoes I put in yesterday, so it looks like they are going to go in as usual.

The doubt arose when I rang Romans because there was a delay in delivery, and whilst chatting to staff it was said that these would only be good for next years seeds. but I will plant them out and see what happens !

I got two lots, Puritans and  a very old one called forty-fold.

Most of the seed potatoes sold here (France) are not any bigger than pigeons eggs, and everybody harvests a normal crop of spuds. Allthough a little bigger than your mini tubers, seed spuds here are nowhere near the size of yours in the UK.

I plant mini-tubers every year and they can produce as good a crop as anything.
They are very vigorous and are the strongest genetics that you can buy.
You are using seed stock that the proffesionals use. Shop around for prices is all I can say.
Visit my website and view my potato blog and videos.

Excellent!
Thats what I was hoping and expecting,  I have utmost faith in the supplier and the quality, never found  better in fact.

This is only my second season at it and I had confusing information as to what is done with the first years crop. Harvest or use as next years seed
Now I know for sure I can plan accordingly.
Many thanks
